Challenge, Face, Conquer, Together

Recreation professionals from the City of Federal Way challenged themselves to the RAGNAR Trail Rainier. This was a grueling, two-day endurance event where each member completed three separate trail running loops, totaling 16 miles per person for a total of 128 miles, in just two hours. “With the support and encouragement from one another, we were all able to exceed our expectations,” said Recreation Manager, Doug Nelson.

Way to go Team Huff-n-Puff!

Metro Parks Tacoma Won NRPA’s 2019 Gold Medal Award!

Fantastic news from the front lines of the NRPA Conference: Metro Parks Tacoma was honored with NRPA’s 2019 Gold Medal Award!

After three years of ending as a finalist, they will finally bring home the Grand Plaque as the winner in their population category (pop. 150,000 to 400,000).

Watch the video they created as part of their nomination.

We also learned that they have earned re-accreditation through CAPRA. Only 178 parks and rec agencies in the nation are accredited, which means only 178 agencies can show that they continuously meet the 151 rigorous standards.

These are the top honors in our industry. Join us in our congratulations!

Cost Recovery Master Class Rescheduled

November 6–7, 2019 | Mercer Island Community & Event Center

110% has developed a Master Class in Cost Recovery that is being held in eight cities across the US in 2019. Host cities include Englewood, Colorado; Mesa, Arizona; San Antonio, Texas; Oak Park, Illinois, and Mercer Island, Washington!

This program was developed as a two-day immersive course that will cover the essentials of financial management and responsibility in public parks and recreation. Given the current economic landscape and the recurring interests in our profession being “recession-ready,” the timing could not be better for a program like this.

Registration for this event is $329.00 (taxes waived). This course is limited to 30 registrations and registrations will only be accepted through October 25, 2019. Learn more today and sign up soon.

NRPA Parks & Recreation Magazine Highlight
"Encouraging Positive, Proper Treatment of Game Officials"
By Jake PolitoJuly 8, 2019

Fall sports have begun and it’s a good time to think about game etiquette and what that means. How many times have you heard spectators or coaches heckle a referee?

Studies show there is a direct correlation between poor treatment and the shortage of sports officials today. Hitting even closer to home, these shortages tend to affect recreation departments first as officials prioritize high school and competitive sports over recreational sports. As recreational professionals, what can we do to help influence our local leagues and organizations to ensure they reinforce proper treatment of officials early in the season? Read the full NRPA article to learn more.
