Volunteer Screening & Onboarding: Using a Risk Management Lens

Monday, February 3 | 10:50 AM - 12:05 PM

Session Description:

Public parks and recreation agencies increasingly rely on volunteers to accomplish their community impacts and deliver their programs. Risk management is an important, and sometimes under-resourced, aspect of volunteer engagement. Those who supervise and support volunteers must balance creating positive, rewarding and safe experiences for volunteers while addressing the needs of the community. Effective volunteer management includes understanding and addressing risk. The speaker will provide a brief risk management primer, a presentation on volunteer engagement best practices, then facilitate peer discussions. Items covered include volunteer position descriptions, recruitment, screening, onboarding, training, insurances, union workplace considerations and support for staff.
