What inspires you about the parks and recreation field?

The parks and recreation field serves as a boundless source of inspiration for me. What truly captivates and fuels my passion is the transformative power that parks, and recreational spaces hold in enhancing the well-being and quality of life for individuals and communities.

First and foremost, parks and recreational areas provide a sanctuary amidst the bustling chaos of urban life. They offer a haven of tranquility, where people can escape the demands of their daily routines and reconnect with nature. The beauty and serenity of these spaces inspire a sense of awe and appreciation for the world around us, reminding us of the importance of preserving our natural environment.

Parks and recreational activities foster a sense of community and social cohesion. They bring people together, regardless of their background or differences, creating a common ground for shared experiences, recreation, and leisure. From sports fields where friendly competitions are played to trails where hikers and bikers traverse together, these spaces promote social interaction, inclusivity, and the forging of lasting connections.

Parks and recreational facilities also serve as catalysts for personal growth and development. They offer opportunities for physical fitness, mental rejuvenation, and personal exploration. Whether it's engaging in sports, partaking in cultural events, or simply strolling through a park, these activities promote health, well-being, and self-discovery. They inspire individuals to push their boundaries, develop new skills, and embrace a more balanced and fulfilling lifestyle.

Additionally, the parks and recreation field play a vital role in environmental conservation and sustainability. These spaces serve as a platform for environmental education and awareness, fostering a sense of stewardship for our natural resources. They provide a living laboratory where people can learn about ecological systems, wildlife conservation, and sustainable practices, inspiring individuals to become responsible caretakers of our planet.

Finally, witnessing the positive impact that parks and recreation have on individuals and communities is truly inspiring. These spaces create opportunities for joy, laughter, and shared memories. They promote mental well-being, support physical health, and contribute to the overall happiness and vitality of communities. Seeing people of all ages and backgrounds come together, embrace nature, and thrive in these environments is a constant reminder of the vast power and potential of the parks and recreation field.

In summary, it is the ability of parks and recreation to enrich lives, foster community, promote personal growth, conserve the environment, and spread happiness that inspires me deeply. The field holds the potential to create positive change on both an individual and societal level, and I am continually inspired by its capacity to enhance the human experience and create thriving, vibrant communities.

What is one creative solution you and your team have applied to a professional challenge?

One creative solution my team and I applied to a professional challenge was enhancing community education about selective tree thinning and its benefits to the environment using visual storyboards.

The challenge we faced was providing the right educational elements to the local community about the importance of selective tree thinning in our parks and green spaces. Many residents were concerned about the removal of trees and the impact it might have on the natural beauty of the area. We realized that we needed to find a way to communicate the ecological benefits of selective tree thinning in a visually engaging and informative manner.

To address this, we developed a series of visual storyboards that showcased the entire process of selective tree thinning, from the initial assessment to the final results. Each storyboard was carefully designed to explain the reasons behind tree thinning, which included improving forest health, reducing overcrowding, enhancing biodiversity, and mitigating potential hazards like wildfire risks.

The storyboards were strategically placed in high-traffic areas of the parks, such as near entrances, picnic areas, and popular trails. We also utilized digital platforms and social media to reach a wider audience, making the storyboards accessible to those who couldn't visit the parks in person.

The visual storyboards utilized captivating illustrations, graphics, and concise yet informative text to engage viewers of all ages. They showed the positive impact of selective tree thinning on the overall health of the ecosystem, highlighting how it allowed for healthier growth of remaining trees, increased sunlight reaching the forest floor, and the flourishing of various plant and animal species.

Moreover, the storyboards emphasized the long-term benefits of selective tree thinning, such as enhanced carbon sequestration and improved air quality. We also included real-life success stories from other communities that had implemented similar practices, showcasing the positive results they achieved over time.

To make the project even more interactive, we organized guided walks and educational tours in the parks, during which our knowledgeable staff members explained the concepts presented in the storyboards and answered any questions from community members.
The creative use of visual storyboards and interactive educational events proved to be highly effective in communicating the importance and benefits of selective tree thinning. It helped build trust and understanding within the community and generated support for sustainable park management practices. As a result, more residents became actively involved in conservation efforts, volunteering for tree planting programs and supporting future initiatives by the Parks Department.

Considering what you’ve learned throughout your career, what advice would you share with someone starting out in the parks and recreation field?

I once heard the term “passion comes from many places,” and that has always stuck with me. This phrase implies that the sources of our deepest interests, desires, and enthusiasm can be diverse and varied. Suggesting that the driving force behind our passion can emerge from different origins, experiences, and influences in our lives.

Overall, "passion comes from many places" emphasizes the multifaceted nature of what drives and motivates us. It encourages individuals to be open-minded, explore various interests, and embrace the diverse sources from which their passions may emerge. It also reminds us that passion is not limited to just one aspect of life and that we can find inspiration in many different places, leading us to live more fulfilling and purposeful lives.

So, remember that passion can come in many forms for your purposes and when working with constituents and colleagues.

What is one of your favorite moments as a parks and recreation professional?  What was your job title?

I can honestly say that one of my favorite moments was at the most recent (2023) WRPA Conference. At the conference, I was able to meet some amazing individuals who have left a lasting impression on me. They have helped me develop professionally and grow personally. My hope is to stay connected with my fellow “parksters” for a longtime to come. It’s not often you have the chance to meet like-minded individuals and nurture those relationships along the way.
