Viki Downey – Aquatic Supervisor at Manson Parks

Describe the scope of your position in parks and recreation.

I am the Aquatic Supervisor at Manson Parks. I ensure the safety of staff and park patrons. I hire and train lifeguards and water safety instructors, created and operate the Free Swim Lesson program and the Junior Lifeguard program. 

How long have you been with your present agency?

I have been working with Manson Parks for 24 years.

Background experience and previous careers?

I became a lifeguard at age 15 then a water safety instructor at 17 years old. This means I have been continually certified as a lifeguard for 57 years and 56 years as a water safety instructor.

How have you participated in WRPA?

I have not yet participated in any events or committees.

Why are you passionate about the parks and recreation field?

I am passionate about this field because it brings unity to the community through work and play. 

What has been your biggest professional challenge? 

One of my biggest challenges has been making sure there is enough diversity to meet the needs of all. Two specific situations: 1) Rescuing 3 adult males simultaneously; 2) Resuscitating a drowning victim with the help of a co-worker immediately after work hours. 

What’s the best advice you can give to someone starting out in the field of parks and recreation?

Work Hard. Be kind. Include all.
