How Do You Recreate?

                                                        Alice Busch

I have been blessed to be in the profession of providing recreation opportunities for people with disabilities for the past 36 years. Growing up on Whidbey Island, I spent my free time tending to animals on our little farm, riding horses, bowling, camping, 4-H and growing a garden. When moving to Eastern Washington for school, I added skiing, rafting, hiking, backpacking, kayaking, photography, and mountain biking.

Often in this field, one forgets to recreate for themselves as we are so busy making sure others do. I constantly remind myself of this and thankfully my husband, Steve and children assist me in this area. I am grateful my family is a part of this lifestyle and enjoy sharing the love of the outdoors with our TRS family.

Since Covid, I have had a new appreciation for the value and meaning of recreation in all our lives. I have gotten back to my roots of passion and rediscovered why I chose this profession. I love making memories with people and look forward to making many more.

Spotlight Professional: Virginia Smith

Member Services Coordinator for the Shore Aquatics Center

Virginia is a Member Services Coordinator for the Shore Aquatics Center in Port Angeles, WA. She has been working for the center for about eight years and has seen the transition of the center during the past few years. One of the most rewarding parts of her current position is having the opportunity to educate our youth on the benefits of being active and living a healthy lifestyle.

Advice from Virginia:

"Work together as a community! Communicate, collaborate, learn from other professionals and be bold!"
