This session will provide an overview of the legal requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for public parks and recreation agencies. It will address considerations for recreation program access and ways to expand upon the minimum requirements to meet universal and inclusive design goals. The discussion will also address the standards for outdoor developed features and amenities, and maintaining the accessibility of features over time.

Learning objectives:

1) The obligation to provide accessible recreation programs, activities, and services is often not achieved over time due to lack of training or deferred maintenance.

2) The session will review the ADA, ABA, and Washington accessibility requirements, design standards for outdoor recreation facilities, and design and maintenance approaches for longevity.

3) Attendees will understand the legal requirements of the ADA, design standards for recreation facilities, and approaches to developing and maintaining accessible facilities.
