Step Up Your Advocacy: Effective Strategies for Engaging Elected Officials

Session Description: From funding for grants to changing policy, your elected officials make decisions that are critical to the success of your agency – and they need to hear from YOU! Join two seasoned advocacy experts to learn about strategies your agency can use to influence policy and engage with lawmakers. They’ll share tips, best practices, and lessons learned to help you take your policy and project advocacy to the next level.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will gain new tools and strategies to effectively engage with elected officials. 
  2. Participants will gain the confidence to build relationships with their elected officials and make budgetary or policy requests.
  3. Participants have an opportunity to ask questions about the legislative process and get up to speed on current legislative efforts. 

Speakers: Betsy Robblee, Doug Levy

About the Speakers: Betsy is the Outreach & Policy Manager of the Washington Wildlife & Recreation Coalition, the chief advocate for conservation and recreation projects across Washington. A Skagit Valley native, Betsy comes to the Coalition with a background of federal policy experience and a deep passion for the outdoors.  She began her career running a political campaign in Northwest Washington then spent six years in the ‘other’ Washington as a policy advisor in the US Congress.  

In 20+ years of lobbying at the state level, Doug Levy has worked on hundreds of successful transportation, Capital Budget, and economic development projects and worked extensively on parks, outdoor recreation and open space measures both on the funding and policy side.  Working on behalf of parks and recreation professionals as WRPA’s contract lobbyist, Doug has been centrally involved in nearly two-dozen successful outdoor recreation initiatives in the form of policy bills, funding, and regulatory relief.
