Managing Your Parks Pesticide-Free

Session Description: Provide maintenance and operations with tools to move away from pesticide use in landscapes, turf, and pathways. The City of Olympia Parks Department has had a progressive Integrated Pest Management program for over 17 years and recently announced that all 42 park properties are pesticide-free with few exceptions.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To understand the risk in using pesticides.
  2. To identify 3 alternative methods of weed control.
  3. Learn the benefits of reducing pesticide use.

Speakers: Sylvana Niehuser

About the Speakers: Sylvana Niehuser is the Operations and Maintenance Manager for Olympia Parks. She has served the City of Olympia in various roles for 15 years. Sylvana was the first female Park Ranger for the City of Olympia. She developed and implemented a successful park ranger program with several park ranger positions and a robust volunteer program. Sylvana currently serves on the board for the Washington Recreation and Parks Association (WRPA) where she finds her collaborative leadership style aligns with her colleagues and fellow board members. She thrives in mentoring and growing a dynamic and talented team who values inclusion and equity.
