Session Description: Snowmageddon 2019 paralyzed cities and towns in Western Washington that rarely see so much snow. In today’s changing climate, flooding, fires, windstorms and other severe weather events can bring your programs and park operations to a halt and leave departments feeling helpless.  Learn how is your Parks Operations vital to the emergency response during and after large weather events? Many Parks Maintenance and Operations divisions have arborists, heavy equipment operators, small equipment operators, electricians, and other highly skilled employees that can be essential to emergency response and recovery. Brainstorm ways to organize and collaborate your team to respond to inclement weather events.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify what resources your department has that can assist in an emergency
  2. Identify who are the essential players in an emergency and recovery.
  3. Learn about an inclement weather policy and procedure.

Speakers: Sylvana Niehuser

About the Speakers: Sylvana Niehuser is the Operations and Maintenance Manager for Olympia Parks. She has served the City of Olympia in various roles for 15 years. Sylvana was the first female Park Ranger for the City of Olympia. She developed and implemented a successful park ranger program with several park ranger positions and a robust volunteer program. Sylvana currently serves on the board for the Washington Recreation and Parks Association (WRPA) where she finds her collaborative leadership style aligns with her colleagues and fellow board members. She thrives in mentoring and growing a dynamic and talented team who values inclusion and equity.
