From Conflict to Collaboration: Engaging Diverse Trail Users in Successful Trail Design and Stewardship

Session Description:
Can’t we all just get along? Too often trail managers are in a position of referee between feuding trail user groups. The key to successfully working with trail users is building a shared understanding of trail challenges and solutions. This session takes a critical look at the multi-use model and explores alternative strategies to mitigate trail user conflict in the design, building, and maintenance of trail systems.
- Understand the different physical affects of trail user modality (bike, hike, horse, etc.) on soft surface trails.
- Understand the different ways that user conflicts arise within and between types of trail users.
- Understand how trail system design can mitigate physical impacts on trail surfaces and social impacts within and between trail user types.

Ryan Ojerio, Southwest Washington Regional Manager, Washington Trails Association
About the Speakers:
Ryan has spent the last 10 years working for the Washington Trails Association (WTA) on trail planning, design, and construction projects throughout southwest Washington. Ryan has led and coordinated volunteers through WTA’s volunteer program, and also worked collaboratively with other volunteer trail user groups and agency staff to complete a wide range of trail projects. Ryan earned his master’s degree in Community and Regional Planning from the University of Oregon and spent several years working in the field of outdoor leadership and environmental education with the University of Oregon's Outdoor Pursuits Program and also with Northwest Youth Corps.
