Mountain Bike Parks: Case Studies
Track: Recreation Programming

Friday, May 1st | 1:15 - 2:30pm
Speakers: David Shaw, City of Redmond; Teresa Kluver, City of Redmond; Joe Brady, Metro Parks Tacoma and Glen Glover, Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance
Room: 317

Description:
Mountain biking is a very popular activity with nearly 40 million participants annually. Historically, mountain biking activities were focused on rural destinations, thus limiting its appeal to many urban users. In order to respond to the growing demand for access to facilities closer to home, parks and recreation agencies must be prepared to design and leverage partnerships with professional organizations and volunteers. This session brings together two agencies to share their stories of how they were able to successfully build highly used mountain bike parks.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will review the growing trends in mountain biking and BMX toward dirt jumping and skills development.
  • Participants will be provided keys to success planning and volunteer management.
  • Participants will discuss strategies to manage risk and liability for a dirt jump bike park; can be applied to other non-traditional facilities.
