ParkRx- Moving From Concept to Reality! Addressing Health Inequities Through Parks and RecreationSpeakers: Doug Levy, WRPA Lobbyist, Pete Mayer, Deputy Executive Director, Metro Parks Tacoma, Johnna White, Health Policy and Government Relations Coordinator, Metro Parks Tacoma & Tacoma-Pierce County Health Host: Pete Mayer, Deputy Executive Director, Metro Parks Tacoma We all know that exercising, being in nature and participating in recreation programs can improve physical and mental health and prevents costly diseases and conditions. Many members of our communities have experienced systemic inequities and discrimination, as well as experience barriers in accessing healthcare which negatively affect health outcomes. There is an opportunity to harness equitable, low and no-cost options for all people to be active and healthy - just as we experienced record levels of park and recreation use and activity during the COVID-19 pandemic. The concept of prescribing parks and programs for their benefits isn’t new, but establishing a framework to better connect healthcare workers with clients, facilitate a parks prescription for fee and non-fee based park and recreation opportunities AND obtain reimbursement from healthcare insurers has eluded us. Come learn about a proposal to establish multiple pilot projects to develop and test such a system. Top Reason to Attend: There is no better time than now, when the value of parks and recreation has been clearly elevated in response to the pandemic, for us to promote the message of the benefits of parks and recreation! This event is free and open to everyone. Register today! Register Today |
