A Message from Mountain to Sound Greenway

During this public health crisis, spending time outdoors has become a lifeline for many Americans. Yet these unusual circumstances mean that all of us, from seasoned outdoor enthusiasts to families heading out to their local park for the first time, could use a little guidance. We hope you’ll join us in sharing the #RecreateResponsibly toolkit (English and Spanish) and message with your own audience.

On May 21, just in time for Memorial Day weekend, the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust and dozens of our partners will be launching the website RecreateResponsibly.org with six guidelines for getting outside safely in these unusual circumstances:

  • Know before you go
  • Plan ahead
  • Stay close to home
  • Practice physical distancing
  • Play it safe
  • Leave no trace

This website, and this movement, will help all of us return to our public lands and waters in a responsible manner to help keep ourselves and others healthy and our public green spaces open. As public lands and waters gradually reopen with new guidance for users, guidance is likely to be inconsistent across boundaries and geographies. One goal in bringing together the Recreate Responsibly Coalition has been to synthesize and amplify a set of new norms for responsible recreation. These guidelines are easy to follow, remember, and share.

If you’d like to share the guidelines, please download the graphics and review the draft social content in English and Spanish. Please feel free to adopt, integrate, and promote this content in any way you wish. Please also note, this has come together quickly, so if you’re unable to elevate the content before Memorial Day, no worries. We plan to continue this conversation for the next 6-12 months and hope to do another big push around the Fourth of July and Labor Day.

Lastly, the Recreate Responsibly Coalition knows that the situation is ever-evolving and differs from place to place. We see this near-term amplification work as a major first step and understand that the tips could very well require an update as circumstances change. Thank you for considering this and for your longer-term partnership in the fight for life outdoors.  Be safe and #RecreateResponsibly !
